1 Samuel 17:40-48 (NIV)
40 Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.
41 Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David. 42 He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome, and he despised him. 43 He said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!”
45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
LATER:
51 Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it.
This was a battle really between our God and the false god of the philistines.
Each person in the battle needed to be acquainted with the one they represent.
What distinguished David from Saul, was that David knew the God he spoke about but Saul the Bible says had turned away from God.
(1 st Samuel 15:11 “I regret that I made Saul king, because he has turned away from following me and has not carried out my commands.” Samuel was angry, and he cried out to the LORD all night.)
Although Saul stood tall in Israel, he was shaken by Goliath.
Saul was scared of Goliath because Saul had drifted from God.
The further we are from God the bigger the Goliath looks.
Goliath represents any intimidating situation in our life.
The more intimate we are with God the bolder we face our challenges.
David who had been on the backside communing with God comes out bold and he is ready to take on Goliath.
When everyone was looking at the background of Goliath the size of Goliath. David knew this man had no covenant with God. David knew the God who keeps covenant. God keeps His Word. God’s Word is his bond. David had spent so much time with God, that he believed with no shadow of doubt God that God will keep his covenant.
